“Ecologizing Taiwan: Nature, Society, Culture,” Taiwan Studies Workshop

​On October 13, 2018, the University of California, Davis, hosted the second meeting of the Taiwan Studies Workshop. The theme for this meeting was “Ecologizing Taiwan: Nature, Society, Culture.” In addition to the generous support from the CCK foundation, the event was also sponsored by the department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University and the department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Davis.  This workshop brought together 11 junior scholars and four senior scholars from the following institutions: Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Lund University (Sweden), SUNY Purchase, Purdue University, the College of William and Mary, Cornell University, University of Nebraska, Middlebury College, the University of Chicago, and Harvard University. Topics ranged from colonial-era Taiwanese surrealism to post-1949 Nationalist agricultural policy and management. The atmosphere was lively and the discussion lasted well past the scheduled time. The event concluded with a round-table discussion about possible themes for its next meeting.
